Newly listed Gas Player Sparks a Bright Future in Botswana’s Energy Landscape

Updated: Feb 6

  • Botala outlined ambitious plans for the nation’s energy transition

  • ‘Listing represents the inaugural step in involving Batswana in the ownership of their gas’

In a groundbreaking move, newly listed gas explorer, Botala Energy, is set to redefine Botswana’s energy narrative by seamlessly blending gas and daytime solar power. The company envisions gas as a pivotal element in the global shift towards renewable energy, and during its recent official listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE), Botala outlined ambitious plans for the nation’s energy transition.

Non-executive director Peter Grant highlighted the company’s strategic focus on delivering Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to off-grid communities, aiming to replace wood-burning practices with reliable and affordable electricity and gas. Botala has secured a long-term sublease of 1520 hectares near Palapye, earmarked for its main Energy Hub and Industrial Park. This initiative not only aims to meet Botswana’s energy needs but also positions the nation as an energy exporter to South Africa.

Grant expressed, “We aim to attract industries looking to leverage reliable energy and the positive attributes of land-linked Botswana.” The collaboration with the Ngwato Development Trust of Serowe involves a 125-hectare sublease in Serowe for establishing a 20MW solar/gas hybrid plant, contributing power to the local grid.

Botala’s proactive approach in exploring approximately 420,000 hectares of prospecting licenses in Botswana has yielded promising results. With seven exploration wells drilled and the fourth pilot production well in progress, the company anticipates becoming a modest producer of commercial gas within 12 months, poised for rapid production escalation.

Grant proudly announced independently certified gas reserves (2C) of 317 Bcf and prospective resources exceeding 8 Tcf within their Project Area. To contextualise, the 317 Bcf could power the BPC 90MW power plant at Orapa for over 45 years, operating 24/7. Botala’s immediate focus is on conducting additional exploration wells to convert some of the 8 Tcf of prospective resources into contingent resources.

Crucially, Botala has showcased its proficiency in bringing gas to the surface for commercial use, demonstrated through recent gas flaring activities. The rapid build-up of pressure in the system suggests commercially attractive flow rates of gas, a promising sign for the company’s future endeavors.

Founded as a private company in 2019, Botala Energy marked a significant milestone by listing on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2022 and, 18 months later, on the BSE. This listing represents the inaugural step in involving Batswana in the ownership of their gas, signaling a dynamic shift in the nation’s energy landscape.
